Things to keep in mind when buying
a sand filter for your pool
- Look at the amount of sand the filter holds, not just the “size”. Different manufactures measure the size of the tank differently. It’s the sand inside that filters the water. Some ‘so called” 16 inch filters only hold 50 pounds of sand while other 16 inch filters hold 100 lbs.
- Faster flow rates are not necessarily better! Extremely high flow rates create less effective filtration. Smaller tanks that claim fast flow rates do not filter as effectively as the same flow rate on a larger (more sand capacity) tank.
- A larger pump is not necessarily better! The faster the water goes through the tank the less filtration that takes place, and the more powerful the pump the more pressure that builds up in the tank. An oversize pump in most cases is a waste of money! A 1.5 HP pump on an 18 inch filter will actually filter better that a 3 HP pump on the same filter, with less stress on the system.
